Resin or vinyl — few questions matter more for what a collectible is worth. Both materials shape the designer toy scene, but they stand for two completely different philosophies: serial production on one side, sculpture on the other.

Vinyl: the material of large editions

Vinyl is the industry standard of the scene. It is light, durable and perfect for runs of hundreds to tens of thousands of units — Bearbrick, Funko and most platform toys are made this way. Vinyl's strength is consistency: every piece looks exactly the same. But that is also its limit. What exists a thousand times over remains a product.

Resin: the sculptor's material

Resin is heavier, harder and far sharper in detail — fine edges, textures and matte surfaces that vinyl cannot reproduce. The decisive difference lies in how it is made: resin is cast, trimmed, sanded and finished by hand. Every piece passes through hours of craftsmanship. That is why resin editions are almost always small — often double-digit runs — and treated as sculpture, not merchandise.

How collectors recognize value

Three factors count. First, the edition size: a numbered edition of 20 plays in a different league than open production. Second, the craft: handwork means no two pieces are fully identical — every figure is a unique piece with a serial number. Third, the silhouette: the figures that hold their value are the ones you recognize from across the room.

What this means for your collection

If you want volume, collect vinyl. If you want substance — weight in the hand, sharpness in the detail, a number on the base — you end up with resin. It is the difference between a poster and an original.
